The pieces

The pieces of a mommy makeover

It is a plan, not one operation. These are the usual pieces.

Timing

Is now the right time?

Surgeons ask about the same few things.

  • You are finished having children, or not sure yetA later pregnancy can undo the result. Saying you are not sure is fine; it changes the plan.
  • Some months have passed since the birthASPS suggests waiting at least six months after giving birth. Some surgeons prefer longer.
  • Your weight is close to where it will stayThese are not weight-loss operations. Surgeons look for a stable weight.
2 more to weigh
  • You do not smoke, or you can stopSmoking slows healing. An ASPS article suggests stopping at least three weeks before surgery.
  • You have help at homeLifting is limited for weeks, so someone else carries the toddler and the groceries.

A surgeon decides with you whether and when surgery suits you.

Recovery

Recovery with kids at home

ASPS says feeling back to normal takes weeks, and sometimes months. Plan the help first.

  1. First daysMost go home after surgery, or stay one night when pieces are combined. An adult stays with you.
  2. First two weeksMost people feel sore and tired. Someone else handles lifting and the school run.
  3. Weeks two to sixMany return to desk work. Strenuous exercise usually waits four to six weeks after a tummy tuck.
The weeks after
  1. Two to three monthsASPS gives two to three months for a full tummy tuck to heal. Swelling settles slowly.
  2. The first yearScars keep fading and flattening for about a year.

Cost

How the cost adds up

There is no single price, because no two plans hold the same pieces.

Surgeon’s fees by piece

American Society of Plastic Surgeons, 2024 national ranges, surgeon’s fee alone. Not Dallas prices; do not add them up.

What else one quote covers
  • Anesthesia and the anesthesia provider
  • The surgical facility or operating room
  • Implants, if your plan has them
  • Garments, prescriptions and tests

Doing pieces in one stage often changes the total. Read the full cost guide, then ask the office to explain its own quote.

Questions to ask
  • Is there a consultation fee?
  • What does the quote include, and what is extra?
  • What would a second stage cost?

Providers set their own prices. Ask whether a consultation fee applies.

What it is

What a mommy makeover usually includes

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons describes a mommy makeover as a combination of procedures after childbearing, usually treating the breasts, the abdomen and the waist, often in one stage. There is no fixed package: the pieces depend on what bothers you and what a surgeon finds.

The most common pairing is a tummy tuck with a breast lift or augmentation. Liposuction is often added to shape the waist or hips. Some plans are smaller: a lift alone, or a tummy tuck alone.

One stage or two

Combining pieces, or doing them in stages

One operation means one anesthesia and one recovery, but ASPS notes it also means a longer surgery and more places healing at once, which adds risk, including blood clots. Most surgeons agree time under anesthesia should be no longer than about six hours, so a larger plan may be split into two stages.

If your plan includes implants, the FDA requires a boxed warning in their labeling and a patient decision checklist your surgeon goes over with you before surgery. The FDA says implants are not lifetime devices and links a rare lymphoma, BIA-ALCL, more often to textured implants. The breast surgery page covers these warnings.

Choosing a surgeon

Checking a surgeon in Texas

Ask whether the surgeon is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, and check it on the ABPS website. Then look up the physician’s license on the Texas Medical Board, which shows license status, education and any disciplinary actions.
